I grew up in a family that has a love for food and a passion to help people. Therefore, it was a natural path for me to join those two passions and become a dietitian. I was always fascinated with a holistic approach to healing and learning how to fuel my body to function at its best.
Throughout my work as a dietitian over the past 10 years, I was seeing an increase of complaints of digestive issues: abdominal pain, cramping, chronic diarrhea and/or constipation, stress, fatigue, social isolation, embarrassment. People are often too embarrassed to talk about these issues. I could see their pain, and I know they wanted more from their life. It wasn’t due to a lack of trying or motivation to change. They were just STUCK and in desperate need of help.
Working with people to help them resolve their digestive issues has allowed them to regain a new lease on life with increased energy, less stress and anxiety, increased confidence and a sense of control. When you suffer with digestive issues, you can literally feel and see the transformation it makes in your life when you are able to identify foods that work for you and foods that cause you discomfort.
I had met with other gastroenterologists and discussed the rising concern and the importance nutrition has on their patient’s outcomes. . There are 60-70 million people in the United States with digestive disorders. Less than 50% of people with IBS even seek medical care for their digestive concerns. A lot of digestive issues can be managed or improved with proper nutrition.
I determined that I would work with this population that needed urgent help to regain their life.
The nutrition resources and expert advice on the millions of suffering with digestive disorders is minimal. Most people go 6 years before they even get diagnosed! These people would continue to suffer from pain, loneliness, embarrassment, discomfort, fatigue, missed days from work/school, missed family time if continued with their discomforts.
Applying dietary changes, people have a new outlook on life: They have reduced social anxiety such as attending parties, not always looking for the closest restroom, no more fear of eating out, move their bodies more without pain, able to fit better in the clothes without as much bloating, increased energy, less stress and anxiety, and increased productivity, and improved relationships.
